The International Technical Caramel Association (ITCA) is a global trade organization representing producers and users of caramel color, as well as related industry associations. Founded in 1976, ITCA promotes the safe development, production, and use of caramel color across the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial, and personal care industries. 

As the voice of the caramel color industry, ITCA collaborates with companies, researchers, regulatory agencies, and other trade associations to ensure that caramel colors continue to be produced responsibly, used safely, and understood accurately by consumers and manufacturers.

Our Mission

ITCA is dedicated to advancing the stewardship, science, and safety of caramel colors. The association focuses on:

  • Supporting scientific research that demonstrates the safety and stability of caramel colors.
  • Collaborating with global regulatory authorities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) to uphold rigorous quality and safety standards.
  • Promoting transparent communication about how caramel colors are made and used.
  • Encouraging innovation and responsible manufacturing practices within the caramel color industry.

Through these efforts, ITCA helps ensure that caramel colors remain one of the most trusted and widely used food coloring ingredients in the world.

Organizations with an interest in caramel color and related food technologies are invited to join ITCA as associate members. This one-year, no-cost membership allows participation in general meetings, technical discussions, and conference calls.At the end of the year, associate members can upgrade to full membership to continue contributing to ITCA’s important work supporting research, safety, and innovation in the caramel color industry.
